Central European University was founded in 1991 with the explicit aim of helping the process of transition from dictatorship to democracy in the countries of Central and Eastern Europe, and Central Asia. It was committed to bringing together students from these 30 countries and from Western democracies, and to nurturing respect for diverse cultures and opinions, human rights, constitutional government, and the rule of law.

CEU continues to attract students from Central and Eastern Europe and Central Asia but today almost 50% of the applicants come from other parts of the world, including the whole of the developing world, as well as North America and Western Europe, Turkey and Southeast Asia. Our enrolled students come from over 80 countries, our faculty from 30. The language of communication and instruction is English.

CEU is a graduate university concentrating on the social sciences and the humanities. The university pursues a mission to achieve excellence in teaching, research and policy in order to become a change maker in the region and beyond, with a special focus on contemporary challenges of open society and democratization.

CEU is located in the heart of Budapest, close to the Basilika and the Danube river, and just a short walk away from the main shopping district, on the one side, and the Parliament, on the other.
